Our Story
2003 – Bakers Dozen Hockey was started by Ralph Wright. A group of us skated together at Hobie Baker Rink at Princeton University during the winter, and wanted to keep skating over the summer.
Our first teams played in a League at the Lawrenceville Prep School. We had 9 forwards and 4 defensemen – for 13 skaters. A “Bakers” Dozen.
Logo – Steve Kruse, one of the original skaters, designed the logo. Sticking with the Hobie Baker theme, it’s the word BAKER designed as a SPAD XIII biplane that Hobie Baker was flying when he was killed in a crash near the end of World War I.
Colors – We skate Orange vs Black, in reference to our Princeton roots. Very few league teams wear Orange, so it was easy choice.
We won a couple of league championships over the years at local rinks, and played in several tournaments, winning one.
2013 – The number of skaters kept growing. Getting tired of 11pm league start times, Ralph decided to book ice and try a friendly Orange vs Black skate. It was a hit right off the bat. First rule: No Yahoos!
2018 – Mike Cook approached Ralph about taking over the Sunday night skate at PDS. The Sunday skate already had solid talent, but didn’t always have enough players to make the skates consistent. They also had trouble collecting money.
2020 – Covid… world shut down, and rinks closed during the pandemic.
2021 – As the world and hockey reopened, rinks started requiring players to sign Waivers. Initially this was just for Covid concerns but quickly morphed into the existing waivers. To make the paperwork simple, and make collecting money simple, Baker’s Dozen Hockey LLC and www.BakersDozenHockey.com were formed.
Today – The Bakers Dozen Hockey skates are some of the best skates in the area. Simple rules: Have Fun, Short Shifts, NO Yahoos!
